Christie Teeple Palmer, Painter
Christie has been a resident of Sedona, Arizona, since November 2011, previously living in California’s desert area, on Chicago’s North Shore, and the east coast. It was Sedona’s unparalleled natural beauty and magnetism over the course of several years which compelled her to make this her home. She finds an ever-changing panorama of color and creative motivation daily with her studio’s view of Cockscomb and Thunder mountains.
Christie pursued her artistic gift and passion at the University of New Hampshire, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art. There she discovered a special talent with water media which has since developed into her own rich style and methods using acrylic, water and simple brushes.
Each painting evolves through layer upon layer of color, graduated washes and unique treatment whether on paper or canvas. Her subject matter usually begins with a landscape or architectural element. This can be as fleeting as a scene outside a car window, or a more complicated composite of images which evoke a personal reaction on her part. In the process of painting, there is at some point a departure from the realistic image – a point at which the work becomes a distinctly original expression – color, lines, shapes and patterns take over. Elements of the real, surreal, and abstract co-exist. Christie challenges viewers by providing colors and contrasts in nature that to most may only be under the surface. Her work, as more than one viewer have aptly expressed, has a certain “glow.
Following her college years, Christie first exhibited in the Chicago area at the Art Institute of Chicago’s juried Art Rental and Sales Gallery, the Artist’s Guild of Chicago (Purchase Award), local galleries, and juried exhibits. She entered exhibits in California’s desert area prior to moving to Sedona, receiving seven first place awards, and has been participating in shows at the Sedona Art Center since 2010, becoming a Juried Member Galllery Artist in July, 2012. She won third place in the 2013 Juried Members Exhibit for oil/acrylic professional category and will be a featured artist for the month of May, 2013, at the Sedona Art Center. Her paintings are found in private collections throughout the United States.
