Laura Pokorny, Ceramicist
Ceramics Artist, Laura Pokorny, lives her dreams. Moving to Sedona from the Cleveland, Ohio area was a dream come true. Just as working with clay and the potter’s wheel had been an unrealized desire within her. Classes at the Sedona Arts Center helped make that desire a reality.
Working with her hands in clay was an easy transition from using her hands to heal–Laura is a professionally licensed Massage Therapist. She had studied with nationally known potters: Dennis Ott, Firuse Stalcup, Karen McBride Deal, Paul Soldner, William Shinn, Ed Oshier, Mary Ann Leahy, Roy Brown, and Acoma Pueblo potters Emma and Delores Lewis.
Her work reflects a wide range of techniques learned and developed over the years, from wheel thrown, functional, altered wheel thrown, and sculptural hand built pieces. Laura uses a variety of clay bodies, surface decorations, firing methods and types of glazes.
People feel the positive energy captured in her work, and are attracted to the colors and shapes she creates. Her pottery has found homes here locally, back in Ohio, in other states, and in South Korea. Laura’s work is displayed at the Sedona Arts Center Gallery, Canyons Gallery in Sedona, and Verdigris Gallery in Tlaquepaque in Sedona.
Laura’s dreams still inspire her with many of her ceramics ideas coming to her as she sleeps. The fulfillment of her goal as a ceramics artist excites and enthralls her with all the unknown possibilities that she dreams of, creates and then brings to life.
